Uniting My Passion for Tumors, Immunology, and the Environment
Hey everyone! I'm thrilled to write this blog post about my amazing experience at Vanderbilt's VSA program, where I delved into tumors and immunology. As a high school student passionate about the environment, I couldn't help but draw connections between these fields and explore how they intertwine.
During my time at VSA, I had the privilege of learning about the intricate nature of tumors. Understanding the science behind tumor formation and progression made me appreciate the challenges faced by medical professionals in the field of oncology. I was able to put together a research proposal specific to ovarian cancer.
One of the most captivating aspects of my studies was exploring the relationship between tumors and the immune system. Learning about immunotherapy and how it harnesses the body's natural defenses to fight cancer was a game-changer. In my VSA program, we had to propose (through an in-depth presentation and research paper) a new treatment for cancer of our choosing. I chose to research ovarian cancer and presented a CAR-NK cell immunotherapy treatment. If you are interested, you can read my paper here. Witnessing the potential for immunotherapeutic approaches to revolutionize cancer treatment sparked a sense of hope within me.
Also, as everyone knows, I care about the environment so I couldn't ignore the parallel between tumor growth and environmental issues. I have shared before that there are clear connections between the two, but this class continues to support that and has assured me I am on the right path moving forward with my passions.
Environmental factors, such as pollution, exposure to toxins, and lifestyle choices, can significantly impact our health and make us more susceptible to various diseases, including cancer. Research has shown that certain pollutants can even contribute to cancer development. As an environmentalist, I want to continue to share that we must advocate for change and even make those small changes ourselves, each day, every day.
Studying tumors and immunology at Vanderbilt's VSA program opened my eyes to the critical link between sustainability and public health. By promoting eco-friendly practices, we not only protect our planet but also contribute to preventing health issues like cancer. Vanderbilt University has made strides in this area, implementing various sustainability initiatives that positively impact the campus community and the environment. You can check out some of these initiatives here.
As I look ahead, I'm excited to explore further how we can coordinate immunology and tumor research advancements with sustainable environmental practices. The more we understand about the connections between human health and the environment, the better equipped we are to build a healthier, more resilient future for ourselves and generations to come.
Clearly, I am immensely grateful for the eye-opening experience at VSA and the opportunity to explore the fascinating worlds of tumors, immunology, and the environment. Let's take a step towards a healthier, more sustainable world!
